The Ombudsman takes an interest in the serious ecological situation of the Mar Menor

08-25-2021

The acting Ombudsman of Spain, Francisco Fernández Marugán, has addressed the Ministry of Environment of the Region of Murcia and the Ministry for Ecological Transition to know the actions they are carrying out for the restoration of the Mar Menor and those they plan to carry out in the future.

Fernández Marugán is particularly concerned about the serious ecological situation affecting this Murcian lagoon.

For years, the Ombudsman has received complaints from citizens alerting about the situation in the area. In this sense, the Ombudsman has carried out several actions before the competent administrations, inquiring about the measures developed to alleviate this environmental disaster.

In July 2020, the Region of Murcia approved a Law for the recovery and protection of the Mar Menor, which provides in its provisions for the adoption of a wide range of measures (creation of bodies, strategic planning, control of urban, agricultural and tourist activity). One year after its entry into force, the Ombudsman has asked the Murcian Government about its effectiveness.

On the other hand, the state administration, through various agencies, such as the Hydrographic Confederation of Segura, SEPRONA or the Environmental Prosecutor of Murcia, has carried out numerous actions denouncing the irregular situation in the area, especially with regard to agricultural crops. Fernández Marugán wants to know the details of these actions.
