Ombudsman Ángel Gabilondo has travelled to the border fence between Melilla and Morocco, where almost 2,000 people attempted to enter Spain illegally last month.

In this tragic incident, dozens of people died on Moroccan soil and over 300 were injured, including migrants and agents from both countries.

Ombudsman Gabilondo also visited CETI, the temporary immigrant refugee centre, and met some of the migrants who entered Spain earlier that day, as well as the president of Melilla, a Government spokesperson, local organisations working in the area, and heads of the Police and the Guardia Civil.

In order to supervise the Administration’s response to the events, the information collected during Ombudsman’s visit will be included in the complaint filed by nine organisations, which led to a number of requests for information to the Ministry of the Interior (Secretariat of State for Security) and the Ministry of Inclusion (Directorate-General of Humanitarian Attention).
